Navigating Life Through Light and Elemental Poetry

Danielle Sablon’s art is an odyssey—a profound journey that carries the viewer across vast, textured landscapes, windswept waters, and vibrant, luminous horizons. Born amidst the echoes of war in Belgium in 1944, Danielle Sablon's early yearnings for freedom deeply sculpted her artistic journey across the globe. "Born in the final days of the war, the concepts of freedom and resistance have been woven into my life through the powerful stories that shaped my early childhood. The dunes embody these two ideas: the sand stands firm against the sea, protecting the land, while the sea brings dreams of freedom," Sablon reflects.

Her brush dances with the path of the sun, weaving its golden glow through the clouds, whispering secrets of the moon’s silent pull over the restless tides. In her strokes, one can find the textures of ocean foam, echoes of Venus rising from the sea, and the raw fury of waves that crash against unseen shores. These waters, though often stilled, hide undercurrents of tension—a reminder that beneath the calm, the storm’s pulse lingers, ready to surge forth. "From the joy of life to anguish, water facilitates the release of energy. The waves, intertwined with planetary forces, carry us from calm to anxiety as the winds unleash their fury. In their eternal ebb and flow, the waves impart their energy, guiding us through cycles of tension and release, reminding us of the fluidity between stillness and chaos," Sablon describes.

Danielle Sablon has been a distinctive voice in European art, particularly noted for her departure from simply depicting visible realities to exploring the realms of the 'invisible'—giving form to dreams and visions. This transformation reflects the broader evolution of fine arts in the 20th century, where artists increasingly ventured into abstract expressions and the avant-garde. Sablon, along with contemporaries like Gregor Gáll, combats artistic categorization, embracing both the visible and hidden dimensions of the world, enriching our perception through natural clues and profound artistic visions.

Danielle Sablon’s creative voice has been celebrated in over 60 exhibitions spanning from Japan to Sweden, bringing her unique interpretation of natural elements to global audiences. Her artistic mediums have evolved from translating emotional expressions in faces and gazes into a profound meditation on the elemental—air, earth, water, and fire—rendered vividly in her painting, engraving, and textile art.

In her comprehensive artistic endeavors, Sablon has mastered a variety of materials to create different collections of art, each representing pure and unmanipulated forms that delve into the depths of natural phenomena rather than just their surfaces. Her approach to painting the horizon, where sky and water meet, offers a unique perspective that captures their harmonious yet tumultuous interaction, reflecting the polarizations and unity within nature.
"Forests are to be seen as an initiatory journey, a path of meditation guiding us toward a life of positivity through the observation of time’s imprints etched upon the trees. Each mark, each scar, speaks to the passage of time and invites us to reflect on the deeper rhythms of existence," Sablon shares about her connection with forest landscapes.

Sablon’s work is held in high esteem, notably culminating in the publication of a comprehensive 269-page art book in 2006 titled "La nature rêvée-peintures," which gathers her most important works. This volume not only celebrates her lifetime achievements but also offers a window into the thematic richness of her portfolio.
As Danielle traveled from the haunting faces of humanity to the untamed beauty of nature, her art expanded to capture everything from the dense woods to the stark expanse of snowy glaciers, from the smallest flower to the expansive, empty plains. Her work resonates with the timeless rhythm of existence, a silent testament that in every wave, every shadow, and every beam of light, profound, universal truths lie in wait.

"Abstract landscapes allow me to capture the impressions absorbed during rare moments of communion with Nature. They evolve into non-figurative images, reflections of relaxation, tension, and emotion. These works create a bridge to the Other, the viewer, by invoking images buried deep within their memory. They enable communication through the imagination, transcending the visible to evoke a shared inner world." Sablon elucidates on her abstract pieces.

This odyssey, rendered in hues and forms on canvas, is a call to explore the elemental poetry of the world, to discover in the dance of light and shadow the enduring echoes of a shared, enduring humanity. Danielle Sablon leads us not merely to see but to feel, to connect, to recognize within the myriad forms and colors the eternal dance of life and light. "Choosing to express myself through painting rather than words, I’ve always been captivated by the human face. It is the very essence of identity, a window into the soul’s inner landscape. A gaze awakened by emotion can transcend and even redefine conventional notions of beauty, revealing a deeper truth beyond mere appearance," Sablon adds, highlighting her philosophical approach to capturing human expressions.
